FontShop International was founded in 1989 and quickly became one of the preeminent sources for typefaces. I fondly remember my first edition of their iconic FontBook... a huge yellow tome containing their catalog. As an eager high schooler with a Macintosh, some Adobe programs and no design education, I imbued the FontBook with a talismanic ability to improve my designs. Nearly 15 years later, I was flattered to be invited to produce a graphic to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The project started by defining an exhaustive list of statistics we might be able to explore that was winnowed down to the most compelling, unexpected and visually engaging options. We were able to determine the weight of all the FontBooks produced over the last 2 decades (126 tons), create a taxonomy of the symbols in FF Dingbats 2.0 and reveal the success of the OpenType font format in 2009 as it overtook PostScript and TrueType sales. One of my favorite explorations manages to be rigorous and light-hearted at the same time...a map of all the typefaces that reference geography which recalls the first Macintosh typefaces (Chicago, New York, San Francisco, etc.) and collectively displays a range of fonts with city, state, country, continent and ocean names. We were both interested in telling a larger story about the growth of the Internet and the change in people’s media habits during this time through the lens of such an influential and heavily trafficked site. The process started by determining what metrics might hold an interesting narrative, and which ones were available over the entire lifespan of the site. CNN was able to provide me with daily page views, the top 20 days for every year and the most popular pages on those days. I was also provided with monthly category views and lists of the nations visiting the site. The spike chart of average weekly page views forms the centerpiece of the chart. The busiest 10 weeks are called out, and the events associated with the week are highlighted below the x-axis… along with other events of cultural significance or large week-over-week gains. I also tracked the absolute and relative growth of their site categories over time, and highlighted several unique metrics at the top of the chart, including the busiest and slowest days of the year, and the number of countries that visit the site (192 at last count). Finally, to put everything in context, I found milestones in the history of the Internet for each year which I placed along the bottom of the chart to create context for the narrative. Ultimately, I think the most fascinating story here is the change in our news habits after September 11, 2001.
